COSMIC INFLUENCES ∞

Cosmic Influences ∞
Storms & Diffusion Zones
Cosmic Storms
Cosmic storms are the primary influence in the Diadem. Lingering effects in the atmosphere are the reason for the diffusion zones. Storms are also how this world ended up with its odd amalgamation of technology, vehicles, buildings, and people.

Not much is known about cosmic storms except that they cause bizarre and unexplained effects. Storm chasers—people dedicated to studying this phenomenon—have equated them to how earthquakes work. They're unpredictable, they can be big or small, and each time one strikes, something in the universe seems to shift.

Some are sure that in the storm lies a way home. Others believe the storms can be controlled to benefit the Diadem. Most just duck and cover—like a weird hurricane, there's nothing to do except wait it out.

Storms will be described during game events. They are the sole cosmic influence that can affect even the strongholds. Storms can only be triggered by the mods.

Diffusion Zones
Diffusion zones are unstable pockets found throughout the Fringes. As a result, the Fringes—essentially, the vast majority of the planet—are not viable for civilization, forcing the population into the few anchor points like Panorama.

In the diffusion zones, a diner might be there one week, then replaced with a decrepit mall or an empty parking lot the next. Hell, it might even shift right before your eyes. This flux phenomenon only applies to structures and non-human entities. In other words, if you burn down a cornfield? You might drive by it again later, unscathed and standing in a completely different area, or have a messy shootout with a werewolf only for its body to vanish before your eyes.

Real people and individual objects are not in flux. If you kill someone, they'll stay dead—and you'll have to face that. The same goes for losing a weapon, damaging your car, or destroying a personal possession.

Items can be looted and taken with you. Scavenging the diffusion zones is a viable method of getting what you need, but what you'll find is highly unpredictable. The risk isn't always worth it, so weigh your choices. Some items might be covered in cosmic residue, rendering them gooey and useless. You'll know it when you see it.

  • Examples of items that can be looted without asking the mods: processed food, gasoline (occasionally), booze, clothes, a box of ammo, batteries, tools, or items of minimal importance like CDs, radios, flashlights, blankets, and pocket knives, small firearms (handguns), etc.
  • Examples of items you should ask about before taking: large firearms, engines or other major vehicle parts, anything in bulk quantities (i.e. 40 cakes), potentially powerful or game-breaking equipment or tools, uncommon technology, etc.
  • Examples of items requiring a Bonus AC claim: small personalized items such as an important token, a wedding ring, a photograph, or other unique item. Generic items specific to a character's canon can be freely discovered, but unique items meaningful to the character must be claimed through Bonus AC.
The general rule is: you can't survive off of looting alone, but you can find some stuff to balance out what you need to buy.

Try to play out some threads when looting instead of handwaving everything. You can always ask us for some fun scenarios if you need ideas!

Stormkissed
Old records show some individuals claimed they developed a bond between them and another individual that included shared emotions, a sense of danger, and even dreams. It's unclear how this bond works, but recently, the phenomenon has begun to surface again.
